The German National Identity Card

The German identity card (Personalausweis) is a fundamental national identification document 📄 issued to German citizens. Since May 2, 2024, it has been issued in a credit-card-sized 💳 format with an embedded RFID chip 📡 that enables secure electronic identification.

📝 Application Process

The identity card is issued by the municipal registration office 🏢 (Standesamt, Einwohnermeldeamt, or Bürgeramt, depending on the district). German nationals living abroad 🌍 can also apply for an ID at German embassies and consulates 🏛️.

✅ Steps to Acquire

📤 Printing & Submission Guidelines

📅 From May 1, 2025, printed biometric passport photos ❌ will no longer be accepted.
📸 Photos must be digitally taken in certified photo studios 🏢 or directly at the citizen's office.
🔒 Digital photos must be securely transmitted to authorities.
